RECRUITINGWhether you’ve played rugby before or are just starting out, a warm welcome is assured to all newcomers to South Gower RFC. Situated on Pwll Du Lane in Bishopston, we have four great pitches in a quiet location, and a small (but perfectly formed) clubhouse complete with licensed bar, kitchen, meeting room, changing rooms, showers and toilet facilities. Everything at Mini and Junior level is organised and coached by unpaid volunteers – usually the parents of players – which guarantees a relaxed and friendly playing and social atmosphere.
South Gower RFC is one of the areas fastest growing clubs and we’re actively recruiting players aged 7 to 19. There’s a place at South Gower RFC for youngsters of all abilities. If you haven’t tried rugby before, or aren’t sure if it’s for you, why not just turn up to one of our training days (every Wednesday at 6:30pm) to watch or join in?
How to Join
If you’d like to talk to the squad manager/coach for your age group, they’ll be pleased to hear from you. Phone numbers and email addresses are listed on the appropriate squad pages listed to the left of this page.
Turn up to watch or join in with one of our weekly training sessions.
If you’d like to join us and become part of the club, your coach or squad manager will provide you with a registration form and any advice you need on kit, the club, or the game itself.
All we ask is that you are regularly available on Wednesday evenings (training) and Sundays (match kick-off is usually around 11am), and that you contribute towards kit, equipment, and match-day food for the players with a modest subscription.

Age Groups
The squad each player joins is based on their age on the first of September e.g. if they were aged 8 on the 1st September 2005 they play for the Under 9’s. Every player is able to play up one age group up e.g. an under 9s player can play for the under 10s but not the other way around unless agreed with the opposing team. If a player is new to rugby he/she can train with a lower age group but cannot play matches – many current players have done this. When a player has been registered with the club / WRU they are insured for death and disability providing they are over seven years of age, please let us know if your player is not registered. Under 8’s play seven a side TAG rugby where there is no contact, under 9s is tackling rugby with no lineouts or scrums, as each player moves on a year an additional skill is introduced e.g. Under 10s play Lines outs and Scrums with no contest or pushing, Under 11s play contested scrums with no pushing. Under 12s play contested scrums and line outs and are allowed to hand off. WRU Pathway rules define these stages. All players need to be registered with the Welsh Rugby Union - if playing under 13s a new registration card is necessary. All other new players also need to be registered, please supply two passport size photographs.
Kit
The club will supply the players shirts for games and additional kit such as socks, shorts, jackets, scrum hats can be purchased from the club. As children’s feet grow quickly other parents would welcome any boots which their player may be able to use, please bring them to the club if they are no use to you.
From the age of Under 9 and upwards it is the WRU’s recommendation that players wear protective headgear and mandatory gum shields, we are very lucky that Sally Wintle of Avenue Villa Dental Practice is able to offer her services free of charge to make a fully moulded dental gum shield for each player at a cost of £20.00 – considerably lower than going to your own dentist. Sally will be available on training nights to offer this service. Ask your coach or team manager for more information.
